Portugal’s most familiar destination is the east to west strip at the
southernmost point on the country - the ever popular Algarve.
A prime tourist destination since the mid 1960’s, the long sandy beaches
and sunny climate, cooled pleasantly in the summer with gentle Atlantic sea
breezes, the Algarve has wide appeal for holiday makers and as a location for
second homes for families, couples, individuals, sun worshippers, sports
enthusiasts and golfers. The mild autumns and springs ensure great out of
season breaks, so holiday homes have long rental periods and have
consistently been good investments for their owners.
In recent years the west coast of Portugal, and it’s inland regions, have started
to receive acclaim, and now the areas known as the Blue or Lisbon Coast, the
Silver Coast and the Alentejo are also becoming additions to the list of
Portuguese destinations.
New road systems and spending on infrastructure, including a new airport at
Lisbon and the A8 motorway from the city to the coast, have opened up
accessibility and will ensure these regions continue to grow. These regions are largely undiscovered and property
developments, although available, are still quite new with good opportunities to enter the market at an early stage.
Unlike it’s Spanish neighbour, Portugal definitely hasn’t hit the headlines with calamitous drops in property values.
Overall a more cautious approach - and protective view of their country’s assets by the banks, the authorities and
developers - have resulted in a steadier ship during the turbulent times of the last couple of years.
